Is RecordReset a law firm?

No. RecordReset is a self-help legal information service. We provide tools, templates, and information so you can prepare and file your own record-clearing petitions. We are not attorneys, do not give legal advice, and do not file on your behalf. For judgment calls (clearance opinions, complex multi-jurisdiction cases, immigration consequences) you should consult a licensed attorney.

Which states does RecordReset support?

Currently 7 states with full eligibility rules + petition templates: Texas, California, New York, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, and New Jersey. The rules engine has 58 unit tests covering the major statutory pathways in each state. We are adding Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, and Massachusetts next.

How do I know if I qualify?

Start with the free eligibility quiz on the home page. It asks about your charge, disposition (dismissed / convicted / deferred), date, state, and waiting period. The engine cites the specific statute that applies (e.g., Tex. Code Crim. Proc. art. 55.01, Cal. Penal Code 1203.4, NY CPL 160.59, 20 ILCS 2630/5.2) and returns one of: eligible, wait_period, not_eligible, or maybe.

What does it cost?

Accepted Answer

$999 one-time per petition. Includes eligibility check, generated petition with statute citations, filing walkthrough, document upload, and case tracking. Backed by a 50% no-questions-asked refund within 30 days if you decide not to proceed. Court filing fees are paid separately to the court (typically $40-$300 depending on state).

What's the difference between expungement, sealing, and nondisclosure?

Accepted Answer

Expungement destroys the record so it never existed. Sealing hides the record from the public but lets law enforcement and courts still see it. Nondisclosure (Texas-specific) is similar to sealing — the record exists but is restricted from background checks. Which one is available depends entirely on the state and the specific charge. RecordReset's rules engine tells you exactly which relief type applies to your case.

Do I need a lawyer?

For most simple record-clearing cases (single dismissed charge, single completed conviction past the wait period, no federal charges, no immigration issues), you can prepare and file the petition yourself with RecordReset. For complex cases — federal involvement, immigration consequences, multiple jurisdictions, contested filings, sex-offense registration requirements — hire a licensed attorney.
